What to do in Athabasca

Golfing

The 18 hole Athabasca Golf and Country Club is renowned for its unforgiving fairways and fantastic setting next to the Athabasca River. Other local 9 hole golf courses include Skeleton Lake at Boyle, and Riverbank Golfing at Wandering River.

Trails The Muskeg Creek Trail System located on the west side of town accessed from 56th street with 17kms of scenic yet groomed hiking, biking and cross country ski trails. The Athabasca Landing Trail as part of the Trans Canada Trail heads south of town from 45th street. Rotary Trail which will eventually loop through the entire town, can be accessed from the Super 8 Athabasca by heading south onto 34th street then turning right to the end of 48th avenue. The riverfront portion is particularly interesting as the Athabasca Heritage Society has signage explaining the rich history of the area.

History Discover the fascinating fur trade, settlement and Klondike history which is detailed on signs around the downtown area. Stop by the library or town office to purchase of copy of the Athabasca Historical Walking Tour Booklet which describes the important buildings and places.

Winter Highlights The Athabasca Region boosts a variety of winter activities. The new Multiplex has open ice times for the curling rink and arena.

Fishing and Hunting The forests and lakes in the Athabasca Region offer the angler and hunter a variety of opportunities throughout the year. Calling Lake and the Athabasca River offer world-class Walleye Fishing, in addition to pike, perch, whitefish and stocked rainbow trout. Whitetail, Moose, Elk and fowl are all popular during hunting season.

Native Friendship Centre

Magnificent River Rats Festival Normally held on Canada day or the weekend before, the Magnificent River Rats Festival has history of attracting classic Canadian Rock Bands followed by up and coming award winning country performers. The event also features a parade, children’s activities, cart races and more.

Athabasca Multiplex Located by Athabasca University, the Athabasca Regional Multiplex includes a curling rink, ice arena, fitness facility, meeting rooms and fieldhouse. Located in other parts of town there is also the Athabasca Landing Pool, Athabasca Library and Archives, Old Brick School and Nancy Appleby Performing Arts Theatre.

The perfect place to be on a hot summer afternoon is the Athabasca Riverfront. The younger kids can splash about in the spray park, while the older ones can practice their skateboard and bike tricks. Be sure to stop and read about the regions rich history before heading over to the 49th street ice cream or chocolate shops.
